In an effort to address retail thievery and home-piracy, The Entertainment Merchant Association, a trade group representing game retailers, is testing a "benefit denial" system for video games.

If "Project Lazarus" is adopted, discs would be shipped to retail stores in a "locked" state and then automatically "unlocked" based on a point-of-sale transaction. That way, theoretically, there'd be no reason to shoplift and piracy would be eliminated.

Activision, one of the industry's biggest publishers may have to cease supporting the PlayStation 3 if Sony doesn't reduce the price of its console, as confirmed by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.

"They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony," said Kotick. "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too." According to the report, Activision paid USD 500 million in royalties to Sony last year which, "probably still worked out at 400 per cent of the profit they made."
